You may or may not have heard about Postnatal or Postpartum doulas but as time goes on more awareness is growing into the importance of post-birth support for mothers and their families.
"Postpartum doulas are non-medical professionals designed to fill this gap with emotional and physical support during the life changing transition to motherhood. Postpartum doulas help women step into their roles as mothers with confidence and satisfaction." - Julia Jones
You may be first time parents or bringing your third child home, whatever your situation, navigating the changes that occur can be challenging at times in those early days, weeks and months. You're either learning how to take care of your baby for the first time or trying to work out how to juggle routines and life with multiple kids. Often during this time, families can struggle to find the right kind of support to help them transition and recovery smoothly.
It's said that the 40 days post-birth will set a mother up for the next 40 years of her life. In, Ayurveda, a 5000 year old Indian healing system, this period is said to be a very sacred and sensitive time for mothers. Ayurveda, places a lot of emphasis on this time as the process of childbirth is highly Vata-provoking, it weakens the body, depletes the tissues and impairs digestion. If a mother is to give her newborn the love and care they deserve, then she herself needs to be strong, balanced and healthy.
In India, mothers are encouraged to enjoy a time of confinement where they don't need to entertain guests, prepare foods, do chores etc. Mothers are given the time to recover and bond with their newborns. Often in Australia, this isn't easily achieved as family and friends can live far from your home and we often live busy and stressful lives and in time this can mean that mothers suffer from the lack of support around them leading to things like Postnatal Depression, depletion, stress, etc.
"The idea of a couple growing a family in isolation is new to human society. We need help getting back to ourselves, mind, body & soul." - Ysha Oakes
A Postnatal doula helps to "mother the mother" whilst also providing support to the whole family. The kind of support offered varies and would include things to help mothers and fathers transition into their roles confidently to tending to the individual needs of the mother. Postnatal doulas help parents ease in the new changes more easily, allowing parents the space to fall in love, adjust and bond with their newborns.
Ayurvedic Postnatal doulas provide the same support as a Postnatal doula but with an Ayurvedic tone to all offerings. This includes providing Ayurvedic wholesome meals right through to Ayurvedic remedies or Ayurvedic medicines to help balance a mother and her baby. An Ayurvedic Postnatal doula will be trained specifically in Ayurvedic Postnatal Care or may even be an Ayurvedic Practitioner so they are able to confidently apply the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda to offerings whilst still being able to adapt offerings to meet mothers needs.
What would those offerings include?
